The Music

2013 is the 7th year that I will be studying music at UCT and the 15th year that I have been singing. I don't believe that there was a point at which I this love began but rather that it was always rooted deep within my being many years before I could comprehend it. My first performance was at my First Holy Communion at Mater Dei parish. I was terrified! And yet, I have been singing ever since.

My journey did not begin as many expect- with Classical music. Instead it began in the Contemporary stream, singing to backtracks of Maria Carey's "Hero" and entering singing Competitions. This love continued through High School until finally I progressed to University level. I say "progressed" because this was not so much a decision as it was a natural progression.

It was not what I expected. There were no flashing lights or "Glee" moments. It was hard work that rarely received praise. This is where my passion turned to true understanding and appreciation of the art. Now 7 years later, I have sung two major roles in opera's done by the UCT Opera School and various recitals, I have been a part of a Community Project for 5 years that has inspired me to share with others the knowledge I have acquired. I have grown...I have changed and I am enriched.

What's next? Well, what left to do but to achieve greatness!

From my heart to yours...
Jay
